Veils & Ventanas
October, 2025
I was the featured artist for the month of October at Remedy Coffee, and I was delighted to share a new direction my work is beginning to veer toward. This was my first show in Albuquerque, and such a sweet introduction it was. The show included a selection of some older works that take inspiration from moire patterns. The ripply, watery lines have become a symbol of defiance for me. An insistence on noticing. Combined with portraits, some of me, some friends, some strangers I met on the internet. These works were an investigation on what it means to be seen and supported by your community. More about that series here.
When looking at these pieces again, with some distance from their original creation, and after they’ve been existing in the world and collecting their own stories, I started to think about their connection to windows due to the use of the window screen material. They are portals into people’s personal lives. And I began to pay attention to windows in my every day life. Reflections caught, moire patterns in sheer curtains, blinds, and most interestingly-the intricate ornamental designs that are commonly used in iron window grilles. It was later that I remembered my great-grandfather was a Mexican blacksmith and I began to wonder if he ever forged window grilles like the ones I was seeing.
The newer works, smaller mixed media drawings of spirits, or magical beings, twisting and dancing around each other, were created rather serendipitously. They started as little doodles as I was thinking about community and what it feels like to be surrounded by a team of unseen forces, quietly nudging you, guiding you, and protecting you. Suddenly the shapes they created began to resemble the designs I was seeing in the window grilles - swirly and spiraling, overlapping and entangled in one another.
This fusion of symbolism is an exciting new terrain for me as I continue questioning what it feels and looks like to be in reciprocal relationships in community. Where resources and gifts and talents aren’t extracted for some personal or corporate gain, but rather flow in a harmonious exchange, constantly fluctuating between giving and receiving.
